Walking from Johannesburg to Cape Town

Hi, my name is Gregory Gerhardt. I work for Drupal agency Amazee Labs. After three years of employment we get one month off to free our mind and do something really extreme. My project? I'm walking from Johannesburg to Cape Town. See my route

I'm back from my trip to South Africa, basically planned for 3 weeks of endurance training. My hip issue has kept my home bound with lots of stretching, strengthening exercises, some paragliding round Lion's Head, diving in False Bay, and very little running. But don't write old man off, I'm back as lively as ever. Only 65 more days to go.

This is the man who helps me build the calory bombs: Dani Hofstetter: Nutritionist by education, ex thriathlon pro and communication consultant. He advised me on two things: How to beef-up in the 6 weeks before I leave, and what to eat during my 25 plus days on the road. A daily trek ration will include 4000 kcals and cover just  4/7 of my daily burnrate of an estimated 7000 kcal. I will therefore try to add a 5-6 kilos of fat before I leave. Thanks Dani, I'm looking forward to that beefin' up starting mid February.

2 more days and I'll be flying to South Africa for my last training camp. Time to introduce the man who has helped me detect my weak spots and focus my rare training time: Dr. René Zenhäusern, sports doc and true sportsman. Checks have included blood tests (iron defficiency), stress echocardigraphy (all fine), x-rays (pre-arthrosis left hip), physical flexibility (shortened femoral muscles), strenth tests (deficiencies with some deeper muscle groups) and more.

Welcome. This site will accompany my ultra-long-distance trek planned for April 2012. The challenge: Walk from Johannesburg to Cape Town in less than 30 days and carry all necessary equipment with me. Why did I choose to do this?

So far my preparation has happened on a rather opportunistic base (lunch breaks, weekends). I'll be ramping up in 2012, starting with two intense training weeks in January, mostly round Cape Town. What I did so far in a nutshell:
